Summary:
The Manager, Corporate Coding primarily acts as a liaison for the hospital and centralized corporate coders. Will work collaboratively with other departments, managers and directors to identify opportunities to improve process efficiencies, effectiveness, and quality within the corporate coding department.
Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and pharmacology is required to ensure accuracy in performing job duties. Also possess a thorough knowledge of inpatient and outpatient PPS, documentation requirements for complete and accurate coding and data quality and integrity skills.
This individual will be required to make independent decisions regarding documentation and accurate ICD-10-CM & PCS, and CPT / HCPCS codes assignments. These decisions will play a key role in determining the reimbursement potential of CHS and adherence to coding compliance regulations and corporate policies developed to ensure accurate billing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee management of remote corporate coders to ensure coding completion within 3 days of discharge or 2 days within receipt for coding pool
Create, assign, revise workflow assignments for coders
Monitor coder quality and productivity
Identify additional contract coding needs to maintain completion of coding within expected turnaround times
Support corporate coder training and implementation initiatives
Ensure hospital-specific coding instructions are maintained and communicated to staff (eg state reporting requirements)
Research charts and resolve bill errors and edits
Collaborate with other coding managers to meet collective goals and ensure consistent application of policies, procedures and practice
Check for receipt of missing documentation and ensure timely completion of charts for documentation received
Work with IS to ensure robust and timely completion of coder access issues and new coder access
Validate timekeeping accuracy for hourly employees (vacation/sick/missed punches)
Weekly reporting for unbilled reports
Monthly and quarterly education participation and tracking of coder participation
Manage new and transitioning coder audits and ensure that reports are reviewed and accurate for release
Identify areas for education to improve complete and accurate coding and billing in compliance with the Inpatient and Outpatient Prospective Payment Systems as needed.
Keep abreast of regulatory changes related to coding and documentation and communicate these changes and collaborate as requested in education communications
Ensure compilation of monthly chargeback reports
Assist with policy and procedure maintenance for HIM coding functions as requested
Qualifications:
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Education: Associate’s degree or higher
Required Experience:
ICD-10 experience required
Understanding of coding practices, official coding guidelines and federal regulations
Broad knowledge of the clinical aspects of diagnoses and procedures to ensure appropriate documentation and compliance with regulatory requirements for coding
Auditing skills for coding quality and documentation
Ability to develop and present effective coding education via a variety of medias
Ability to work with all levels of personnel from coders to senior management.
Strong process management and improvement skills
Preferred Experience:
Minimum of three years coding and management experience in HIM preferred
Experience in small to mid-size multi-hospital system
Required License/Registration/Certification: Must be RHIA, RHIT, and/or CCS.
Computer Skills Required:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software and Database software.
Experience with PC, mainframe applications, and encoding systems
