The Laboratory Director is responsible overall operations of the laboratory department. He/She is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and a sense of common purpose among team members. The director must have a highly developed sense of responsibility and awareness of the importance of work to the healthcare system thereby creating a culture of accountability. He/She must be dedicated to the profession and be familiar with all aspects of the laboratory operation including point-of-care testings. The Laboratory Director provides management expertise for the completion of workload in a timely and accurate manner; ensures efficient and effective operations; and maintains compliance with the guidelines of applicable accrediting agencies.

Responsibilities

Directs and integrates the operations of the laboratory to ensure efficient and effective operations that support quality patient outcomes.
Collaborates with senior leadership to develop, implement, and monitor the goals of the department to support the mission of the hospital.
Ensures adequate staffing and resources to achieve goals of the hospital.
Hires, trains, assesses competency and performs ongoing performance appraisal of staff.
Creates a culture of accountability.
Provides continuing education opportunities and an effective mechanism of communication.
Monitors and reports quality indicators to include pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
Sets the threshold for these indicators to support quality patient outcomes.
Involves staff across shifts and job descriptions to become engaged in process improvement efforts.
Develops, justifies, and implements personnel and operating budgets for the department.
Continuously reviews staffing plan, financial and productivity metrics to ensure the financial goals of the hospital.
Ensures compliance with accrediting agencies and government regulations and participates in hospital and laboratory committee meetings.
Prepares capital budget and implements new technology in conjunction with the Medical Director and technical staff.
Collaborates with the Medical Director on laboratory test utilization processes and appropriateness of the on-site test menu to meet the changing clinical needs of the hospital.
Coordinates referral testing provided through contracted services.
Collaborates with enterprise departments such as Information Systems, Purchasing, and Billing on operational issues and special projects.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution required. Master’s Degree preferred.

Qualified as a General Supervisor of High Complexity Testing as defined by CLIA standards in 42CFR493.1461. | MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP), or MLT(ASCP) certification or equivalent preferred

A minimum of four years experience in high complexity testing.

Management experience is required.
